Using artificial intelligence (AI) tools for research with licensed resources such as indexed databases and ejournals is a new area for libraries, publishers, researchers, and students. Libraries are starting to notice clauses in some licenses that speak to the use of AI tools with certain subscribed products. So far, these licenses usually prevent users from doing the following:
Uploading any part of the licensed resource (such as full-text ejournal articles or ebook chapters) for purposes of training large language models and generative artificial intelligence technologies
Using AI to create a competing product or service for others to use.
Disrupting how the subscribed products work.
To meet current license agreements articles, book excerpts and other full-text material obtained from Library Services should never be fed into any AI tool (including Microsoft Copilot).
These restrictions may not apply to content that is openly licensed, like material under a Creative Commons license or to AI products that only assist with editing, grammar, and translation.
